This exercise is well designed and worked very well as written. I find a lot of wonderful lessons on the web but I usually have to modify them to make them work. When I don't modify, I usually sorry! But this exercise worked perfectly without any additional work. A great time saver! I printed the pictures and laminated them to use over.

It is good for the students to process the unfamiliar words and also work with the data. Great for understanding graphs.

These on-demand videos (best viewed with Internet Explorer) are a great resource for parents and teachers who are trying to understand how children learn math. The researchers do an excellent job of observing and asking probing questions without interfering in the students' work. These classroom observations are interlaced with expert commentary, making the videos instructive for both parents and professional educators.

Every school should include the arts and music into scheduled lessons that make connections to social studies, math. technology, history,science, and language arts. This lesson is a great way to start those connections. I teach music from this platform and many times the students are unaware of the breadth and depth that every subject is interwoven. I see many opportunities in this lesson about "The Art of Piet Mondrian" to get students to make those connections.

I am big fan of Mondrian, and to come across such a lesson plan to use was a joy. I have not used the lesson plan yet but I am going to use it once I start my student teaching. My main goal was to find a plan that incorporated other subject areas such as this plan did. The activity of getting the students to not only do a Mondrian-style painting but as well to lay out a grid system on a computer program to make an artwork, in my eyes, is a wonderful step forward in integrating technology into art making. I personally went through this plan and tried it out myself and absolutely loved it. Not only do you get a feel for the original way in which Mondrian created his style on canvas, but you get to experience how you can create such works through computer graphic programs.

I love that this lesson includes different subjects such as history, math, art, music, and language arts. I love that the definitions are included too. I would make a chart with the definitions and have students come up and try to guess the meaning with the help of other students (maybe even use pictures or drawing to help them guess the meaning before I uncover what the real meaning is). A lot of the students in my class love to draw so this is a great way to introduce art work that students might not know to help expand their horizons.

I like the hands on nature of the lesson. The kids will enjoy making the necklaces and experimenting with patterns.

I am going to use this lesson on one of the first days of the new school year. In the Patterns of Everyday Life, it is a math lesson, something that is familiar to my students and gives students a jumping off point to get to know each other. They will learn about each other as they discuss their morning routines and will see how much they have in common with each other. Next they can make a bird necklace and we can bring in ecology, taking care of the earth and it's inhabitants. We can also talk about our pets if we have them and get to know even more about each other. These are great lessons that show how math and art can work together to not only teach basic math skills but work to establish an ongoing atmosphere of learning and co-operation.

Using manipulatives to create a pattern is an excellent method for young learners. Relating it to activities they experience in every day life enhances the learning process. This hands-on approach to teaching patterns as they occur in the world, and reinforcing learning through allowing the student to create their own was a successful lesson!
