This turned out to be a visually stunning book, one which I perused with my students over and over. They were intrigued by all of the intricacies of Buddhist art, and Asian culture. This book taught us so much, and I would recommend it for anybody. It was well written, well categorized and simply fun to look through.

The Freer Gallery of Asian Art is my favorite of all the Smithsonian museums. This Gallery Guide to the Art of Buddhism beautifully presents the works I saw first-hand in the gallery for the students in my classroom! Thank you for having it available online for my students in Las Vegas!

Buddhism is a theme in Asian Art that can be traced across Asia and links both Eastern and Western art. This resource is excellent in that it provides just enough information for a general audience member to understand how Buddhism spread and how the imagery changed. Only suggestion is to add one more link to Buddhism in Korea and Southeast Asia and possibly Buddhism today.

This website makes it so easy to find images that can enrich study of any topic.

The resource from the Freer Gallery of Art about the ancient art in Egypt is what I will use for my integrated math, reading and Social Studies classes next year. The project started out with a drawing activity that we have done in the past in math. It is a good link to show the students how it was used in Ancient Egypt. The project then go on to tell a story why it was done this way which goes along with what we teach about the ancient Egyptian culture. Many student choose an artistic component for the culminating project for the unit. It will be a good example for what the students may want to work with on their own.

I have used this site since the exhibit in 2006 in my World History classes. The reason I like is so well is that it is comprehensive and student friendly. It gets students thinking about the origins of the word "bible" as well as how these 'little books' extended technology of the time period.

This has a wide range of ways for students to use the Freer and Sackler Galleries to enrich their studies of Chinese art. This allows a teacher to pick and chose in what areas students should focus their attention.

Parts of this website are perfect for younger children. I have used the slides in the "Tantric Devi" in both literature and art. The descriptions of the various depictions of Devi are clear and child friendly. I like using the coloring page for children to explore what they "stand for." It is a new twist on the old Coat of Arms activity often used as a get to know you activity at the beginning of school.

Extremely helpful in understanding the subject matter. It helped us create a multimedia artwork emphasizing the art elements of color, line, shape and pattern. A very tough subject but handled beautifully and explained in simple yet effective language.

Very helpful for in-depth discussion. Students are always interested to find out about different religions. Good information to discuss deities.

This lesson is a great introduction for your students when learning about Japan. Because it utilizes more than just art comparison, including cultural and physical geography, it is appropriate to use to start your unit. Students will gain an understanding of Japan's current and past culture, as well as the geographical features. Finally, they put it all together using higher-order thinking skills to figure out ("being detectives") why Japanese art looks the way it does. Fun and informative lesson!
