Students experience the kinds of work done by employees of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery by playing a game of “Include Me In!” After they learn the criteria that must be met in order for a portrait to be placed in the gallery, students meet to decide whether portraits of various people in history can justifiably be included in the museum’s collection. Brief historical information is provided on four individuals in history. Students are then asked to create their own portrait gallery in the classroom.
