The
Confusion Era:
Art and Culture of Japan During the Allied Occupation, 1945-1952
Imatake Shichiro,
"Let's All Make a Bright Future for Japan: Sumitomo Bank," fall
1945. Offset print, 67 x 48 cm.
Some posters appearing in the first months after the war
combined commercial advertising and public service announcements. In this
poster, designed by Imatake Shichiro (born 1905) for the Sumitomo Bank,
the poignant image of peace doves speaks to an issue clearly prominent on
survivors' minds-- peace. Imatake was a leader of the modernist movement
in graphic design as well as being a noted painter.
