The
Confusion Era:
Art and Culture of Japan During the Allied Occupation, 1945-1952
Designer unknown,
"Peace Cigarettes," 1950. Offset print, 52.2
x 37.8 cm. Tobacco and Salt Museum, Tokyo
This Nihon Senbai Kosha (a government agency) poster advertising
"Peace Cigarettes" carries its wishful request in both Japanese
and English in what was surely a vain attempt at controlling this ubiquitous
black market currency.
Caption in bottom left corner reads,
"Getting the Cigarette off the Black-Market let us put a light on the
culture."
