The Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) produced this booklet with generous funding from Brother International Corporation. The office wishes to thank Dorothy Fischer of Brother for her steadfast support of our work.
As the central education office for the Institution, the Smithsonian
Center for Education and Museum Studies (SCEMS) serves teachers and students, grades pre-K through
twelve. For this audience, SCEMS interprets the collective knowledge of the
Smithsonian and teaches methods for learning from museums. SCEMS provides
professional development for teachers, publishes informational and curricular
materials for schools, fosters mutually beneficial relationships between
schools and museums, and disseminates information about the Institution's
educational programming and materials.
