The weaver who produced this blanket is unknown, but she or he probably lived
in or near the northern New Mexican village of Chimayó. By the early 20th
century, weavers in this area produced textiles for both local use and for sale
to outsiders, with curio shops and local stores often serving as
intermediaries between weavers and tourists. Many weavers received yarns
and other raw materials on credit from merchants to whom they were obliged to
sell their products at discounted prices. Others ran their own workshops
or wove in workshops owned by Hispanic traders. |
